Shri Alphons Kannanthanam
K.J. Alphons Kannanthanam is serving as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) in Ministry of Tourism and as Minister of State in Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology since 3rd September, 2017.
Alphons was born in Manimala, Kottayam District on 8th August, 1953, to K.V.Joseph and Brijith Joseph. His father was a World War II veteran who became a school teacher after the war.
He received his early education in a Malayalam medium village school in his village. He completed his masters in Economics, and got into the IAS in 1979.
He worked in the Indian Administrative Service until 2006, when he was elected an independent Member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, from Kanjirappally in Kottayam District, Kerala. He was also a practicing advocate in the High court and the Supreme Court of India. He resigned from the Assembly in 2011 and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is a member of the BJP National Executive.
He was in Time Magazine's list of 100 Young Global Leaders in 1994.
He pioneered the literacy movement in India by making Kottayam the first 100% literate town in India in 1989. Kottayam District also achieved a quality health index better than the United States of America, when he was the District Collector. He built a cancer hospital at Kottayam Medical College, with contribution from 8.2 million people. As Commissioner DDA, he has demolished 14310 illegal buildings.
Authored the book titled “Making A Difference”, published by Penguin India, in 1996. The Malayalam translation, “India Mattathinte Muzhakam”, published by DC Books, in it’s 12th edition.
