Photonics Development Division

hotonics deriving its name from photon which is the basic light particle is a cutting edge technology merging optics with electronics. Photonics is essentially a technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The applications of photonics can be found in almost every field including information communication technologies, manufacturing, lighting, security, life sciences, medical sciences to name a few. Photonic technologies form the technological backbone of the World Wide Web revolutionizing the exchange of information and data flow. Some of the other common applications of photonics can be found in CDs, holograms, lasers for industry medical use, fiber-optics et al. The increasing convergence of an industrial society with the dynamics of information society can be attributed to the application of Photonics Technology.

The government has identified Photonics as a priority area. National Photonics Council was set up and a dedicated Photonics Division was created. During the Ninth Plan a Photonics development plan was evolved and implemented. Some of the thrust areas included development of optical fibre communication, Biophotonics, Green Photonics, Special Optical Fibers-PCF (Photonic crystal Fibers), Optoelectronic Packaging, Nanophotonics, Photonic Crystal Fibres, Polymers for Photonics, Photonics Sensors etc.
