Plant Operations/ Handling of Machinery

DO's

  • Use only those equipments and machines which you are qualified to operate.
  • Protect your eyes, feet and head, depending upon the kind of risk you are exposed to while working in the plant or handling the machinery.
  • Do know the following:
    •  Where the emergency vehicle is parked?
    •  Who handles first aid of your area?
    •  Where the First Aid Box is located in the plant?
    • Where the emergency equipments are located in the plant?
      • Where the dispensary is located?
      • Where the emergency numbers are listed?
    • Always keep the first aid box well maintained in the plant area.
    • Before operating a machine, ensure that guards and safety devices are in place, in good operating condition and properly adjusted.

    DON'Ts

    • Don't guess. Ask others if you are not sure. Wrong guesses can be very costly.
    • Don't leave the plant area unattended. No machine should be left unattended unless it is equipped with suitable automatic controls.
    • Don't leave the tools as such after use. They may be thrown away or fall when the machine is started.
    • Don't wear loose gloves/clothes/ties while working on rotary equipments.
    • Don't leave the tools on the top of step-ladders, ladders rungs or scaffolds, as they may fall and cause injury.
    • Don't paint the wooden ladders. Paint conceals defects.
    • Don't use metal ladders around electrical equipments.
    • Don't place ladders in front of the door, pedestrian aisle, unless proper warning signs have been posted or someone is on guard.

    DO's

    • Keep long hair and loose clothing away from the moving paths and remove all jewellery before operating a machine tool.
    • Keep the floor in the plant area clean, dry, free from oil, extension cords, air hoses and other tripping or slipping hazards.
    • Make sure to use lockout devices or warning tags, when shutting down a machine to prevent someone from turning on the machine without your knowledge.
    • Carefully inspect the ladder before using. Extension ladders shall be set at a proper angle and securely tied at the top. Remove the ladder if it is not required any longer.
    • Always wear safety working belts when working at height.

    DON'Ts

    • Don't attempt to clear away oil, jams, clean, adjust or calibrate a machine when it is running.
    • Don't remove the guards from machine without the consent/knowledge of others.
    • Don't attempt to break or slow the machine with your hand or a make shift device.

    • Don't use dull cutting tools. Any cutting tool is unsafe when it becomes dull.
    • Don't use under-size or over-size or worn out spanners and other tools to loosen or tighten the nuts and bolts.
    • Don't use electrical hand tools without proper insulation and earth connection.
    • Don't enter the plant area or go near the machine if you are under the influence of Alcohol/drug or are feeling sleepy.
    • Don't allow untrained workers to work on machines.
