R & D in Electronics

The electronics sector is a key player in the economy and one of the most globalised industries in the world. The estimated demand for electronics hardware in India is projected to be USD400 billion by the year 2020. In order to progressively increase the value addition in electronic product manufacturing, a sustained R&D programme in the electronics sector is essential for the development of indigenous technology, its transfer to industry for commercialization, and to increase the Intellectual Property (IP) content of product design and development.

In order to promote an inclusive, vibrant and sustainable ecosystem for R&D and innovation, the government, industry and academia are working together on a common platform to find solutions for the growing societal need and challenges. Towards achieving these goals the R&D in Electronics Group have initiated various research programmes in different areas of technology associated with electronics for the overall growth of this sector in the country. These programmes are formulated and coordinated by the respective divisions under this Group listed below.

Divisions under R&D in Electronics Group:

The major R&D initiatives of the group have been in the National Mission on Power Electronics Technology (NaMPET), Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technology, Automation Systems Technology Centre (ASTeC), Deployment of Automation technologies in process industries; Development of medical linear accelerator and its linked accessories, MRI; E-waste management, Development of super-capacitors; Special Manpower Development Programme (SMDP) for chip to system design, Centre of Excellence in Analog Design; Centres of Excellence in Nanoelectronics ; Indian Nanoelectronics User Program (INUP); Setting-up of Technology Incubation Centres to initiate technology start-up through TIDE scheme and Creating IPR awareness and supporting international patent filing.

R&D projects are evolved in identified thrust areas by respective divisions, and are further appraised by Working Group (WG), comprising of leading researchers, scientists and industry representatives from various organisations. Appraised projects are processed further based on the recommendations of WG and the priority areas of the department. After initiation, the technical and financial progress of the individual project is closely monitored by Project Review and Steering Group, comprised of experts from the related areas.

R&D Societies

Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET)

C-MET has been set up as a Registered Scientific Society in March 1990 under DeitY as a unique concept for development of viable technologies in the area of materials mainly for electronics. C-MET is operating with 3 laboratories located at Pune (Head Quarters), Hyderabad and Thrissur with specialized research mandate at each place. Electronic Materials & Components Development division is providing programme support for C-MET.

Statutory Organization

Semiconductor Integrated Circuits Layout Design Registry (SICLDR)

Under the Semiconductor Integrated Circuits Layout Design (SICLD) Act 2000 which provides for protection of semiconductor IC layout designs, the Semiconductor Integrated Circuits Layout Design Registry (SICLDR) has been set-up. The primary function of the Registry is to examine the layout-designs of the Integrated Circuits as submitted and issuance of the Registration Certificate for the original layout-designs of the ICs. Microelectronics Development Division is providing programme support for C-MET.
